Exmouth Master Plan

East Devon District Council and Devon County Council have commissioned LDA Design of Exeter to produce a plan for the redevelopment of Exmouth's town centre. The brief includes many areas including those known as the London Inn, Old Gas works, Camperdown Gut, the estuaryside and the bus station.

This Exmouth Plan website

This 'Exmouth Plan' website has been created over the last few years in order to stimulate thinking on how Exmouth might be developed in the future. Some elements have now been overtaken by events, for example the Strand redevelopment, however much of the thinking still forms a useful basis on which to contemplate how the town might be advantageously improved.

but how will it be? What do you want?

A development strategy for Exmouth - Establishing criteria that can be used when planning the town's future

Why a Web Site?

Talks are taking place about the future development of Exmouth. This may involve significant changes to large areas around the town centre. Once made, changes are rarely reversed and it is therefore essential that everything is taken into account before any "concrete" decisions are made. It is also vital that we start with the broadest possible view, so that we know that what is left out of the resultant plan will have been omitted intentionally and not because it was not considered.

This website is intended to be a useful resource during the decision making process by:

  • Publicising ideas that might otherwise be overlooked
  • Stimulating interest in what could be done
  • Enabling people to feel that they can contribute
  • Commenting constructively on ideas and proposals
  • Show how changes in one area impact on another

Exmouthians will want to be consulted before any concrete decisions are made.

Deciding what we want.

This website aims to create a vision of what might be and thereby encourage discussion. Initially, it is only concerned with two basic questions:

  • What do we want? and
  • Where do we want it?

At this stage we are not concerned about viability, the availability of funds or how the work will be done. That comes later. Knowing what we would ideally like, if we could have it, will enable us to identify those development proposals have a long term benefit and, more importantly, those that do not!

An Exmouth Plan

The town needs a strategic plan so that anyone who wishes to become involved in the planning process can quickly understand how we would like our town to look in the future and the steps that we envisage taking in order to get there. This will enable them to take part in development debates and identify how new proposals impact upon current plans. A strategic plan can be passed to developers so that they are aware of issues outside the particular area within which they have been contracted to work. The plan should be short and deal in concepts rather than details.

A Resource for Residents and Planners

Intended to be novel, it is hoped that all parties will find this website useful. Digital photography enables us to take large numbers of photographs. Pictures are therefore extensively used to show locations referred to in the text. Maps are also used to clarify the suggestions made.

Your Views and Opinions

In the left hand column you will find two "e-mail buttons". Use these to air your views about the site itself and the ideas expressed in it.

This is our chance to influence the way in which our town is developed, let's take it!
