Vision - The Exeter Road Village.

A local shopping area with a mixture of convenience, takeaway food and speciality shops. It is envisaged that Exeter Road be used by local people for shopping and as a stress-free route to the town centre with incidental shopping en route. Emphasis should be on walking and cycling with a reduction in the dangers associated with through traffic. It has all the essentials of a village centre and planning should be such as to ensure that this thrives.

Current Situation.

Exeter Road is currently a local shopping area with a considerable amount of two-way through traffic. Traffic flow is confused by street side parking and road conditions are considered dangerous especially for children and the elderly. Crossing the road is hazardous throughout the length of the road. Side roads are heavily used as through routes and for residential, shoppers and office parking.

Comments.

The area should be tranformed into a more relaxed, fume free shopping street by the careful introduction of one-way traffic systems, cycle routes, closed residential streets and improved on and off-street parking adjacent to the local shops.

Sites of particular interest for beneficial development are Windsor Square/Police Station, the old firestation and the library (if a new larger library is built elsewhere). The first two of these sites could provide the local and long-stay car parking which would encourage increased use of this are by local people.
